About the Product:
The product is networking technology used in data center infrastructure. Its software implements and exposes Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and routing capabilities, including VLANs, forwarding, tunneling, and traffic controls. Automated validation must cover multiple software layers, physical and virtual network devices, and successive hardware generations.
Testing involves more than confirming that a switch can be configured. It must establish that networking features behave correctly, that existing capabilities remain compatible where expected, and that new capabilities and performance requirements are validated. Engineers who understand how switches and routers work beneath the configuration layer are essential to designing effective tests and diagnosing failures.
About the Role:
You will join a distributed Automation and QA team as an individual contributor, owning test work from feature discussions through planning, implementation, review, and ongoing maintenance. You will work closely with developers and other engineering stakeholders to understand new networking features and turn their requirements into reliable Python-based automated tests.
The role combines feature validation with ownership of the infrastructure that supports it. You will improve automation libraries and tools, integrate tests into CI/CD pipelines, investigate execution failures, and reuse existing code where appropriate. Team members review CI results and take responsibility for failures in the areas they know. The position requires independent work in a remote setting, alongside clear communication and collaboration across teams. Critical issues or release periods may occasionally require work outside normal hours.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define test plans, test cases, and validation procedures for new networking features.
- Develop and maintain Python-based automated tests and the libraries that support them.
- Design and improve test automation infrastructure, tools, and processes.
- Work with developers and other stakeholders to clarify feature behavior and test requirements.
- Validate Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionality on physical and virtual switches and routers.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and improve the reliability of their execution.
- Review test results, investigate failures, and distinguish product defects from automation or environment issues.
- Debug automation execution issues and maintain tests as features and hardware generations evolve.
- Reuse existing infrastructure and code where it provides a sound basis for new tests.
- Document and communicate findings so that issues can be followed through to resolution.
Required Competence and Skills:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in networking-focused engineering, with deep knowledge of switch or router functionality beyond device configuration.
- Experience developing and troubleshooting Python-based test automation and its supporting infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of L2 and L3 networking, including switching, routing, and protocols or features such as VLANs, forwarding, ACLs, quality of service, and tunneling.
- Experience working with physical and virtual L2/L3 switches or routers.
- Working knowledge of Linux and CI/CD methodology and tools.
- Ability to investigate complex, low-level failures, identify root causes, and drive issues to resolution.
- Clear, structured communication and the ability to work independently while sharing knowledge and supporting cross-functional partners.
Nice to Have:
- Experience reading or programming in C or C++ to investigate the software under test.
- Experience with Docker, Ansible, or Vagrant.
- Experience with networking test equipment or relevant professional networking certifications.
