Backend Engineer
We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Golang) to join our client, a Belgium-based, fully remote SaaS company developing a cloud-based Quality Management System (QMS) for the Life Sciences industry, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical technology companies.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll design, build, and maintain scalable backend services that support quality management, business processes, and regulatory compliance. You’ll work with Domain-Driven Design (DDD), microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures while contributing to the platform’s transition toward Golang as its target backend language.
This is a hands-on, product-focused engineering role where end-to-end ownership is essential. You’ll collaborate closely with Product to understand business requirements, model complex domains, make technical decisions, and deliver production-ready features. We’re looking for someone who can clearly explain what they’ve built, why they made particular engineering decisions, and the outcomes of their work.
You’ll also use AI-assisted development tools as part of your daily engineering workflow, mentor junior developers, and contribute to technical decisions and engineering best practices.
Must-have for the position
- 5+ years of professional backend software development experience;
- Strong hands-on experience with Golang;
- Experience designing and developing scalable backend services and REST APIs;
- Practical experience with Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and microservice architecture patterns;
- Strong experience with relational databases and SQL, particularly PostgreSQL or MySQL;
- Hands-on experience with Docker and containerized applications;
- Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests;
- Understanding of CI/CD processes, application monitoring, and production service maintenance;
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of product features or business subdomains, from requirements clarification and domain modeling with Product through implementation, testing, and delivery;
- Ability to translate business rules and product requirements into reliable, maintainable backend solutions;
- Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools in daily software engineering workflows, with the ability to explain how these tools contribute to development, testing, or problem-solving;
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions, discuss trade-offs, clarify requirements, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Strong problem-solving skills, proactive ownership, and the ability to work independently within a collaborative engineering environment;
- Experience with code reviews, mentoring, and knowledge sharing;
- Ability to develop reliable, secure, and well-tested software for regulated environments.
Will be a strong plus
- Experience with Python or TypeScript;
- Familiarity with GraphQL or gRPC;
- Experience with event-driven systems and messaging technologies such as Kafka, MQTT, or AWS SQS;
- Understanding of CQRS and Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) patterns;
- Experience with MongoDB or Elasticsearch;
- Experience with Kubernetes and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP;
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Bitbucket Pipelines;
- Experience with distributed tracing, structured logging, and monitoring;
- Understanding of frontend architectural patterns such as MVVM or MVI;
- Previous experience developing software for regulated industries.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and REST APIs for a cloud-based Life Sciences Quality Management System;
- Own business subdomains and product features end to end, collaborating with Product to clarify requirements, understand business rules, model domain concepts, and deliver working solutions;
- Make and communicate technical decisions, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and take responsibility for implementation outcomes;
- Apply Domain-Driven Design and microservice architecture patterns to build maintainable and extensible backend solutions;
- Contribute to the platform’s transition toward Golang as its target backend language;
- Implement reliable communication between services, including event-driven integration patterns;
- Develop and maintain comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure code quality and reliability;
- Take full ownership of services, including implementation, CI/CD, monitoring, diagnostics, and maintenance;
- Build secure, reliable, and fault-tolerant backend components suitable for regulated environments;
- Actively use AI-assisted development tools to support coding, testing, debugging, and other engineering activities, while maintaining ownership of code quality and technical decisions;
- Conduct code reviews, share engineering best practices, and mentor junior developers;
- Collaborate closely with UI developers, product/project managers, team leads, and DevOps/Infrastructure engineers;
- Communicate progress, technical challenges, and proposed solutions clearly and proactively.
About the project
Our client develops a cloud-based, pre-validated Quality Management System (QMS) designed for companies operating in the Life Sciences industry.
The platform helps pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical technology organizations manage quality processes, operational workflows, and product-related data while meeting regulatory requirements.
You’ll contribute to the backend architecture and development of this SaaS platform, working on scalable services, API integrations, and reliable data processing.
The engineering environment emphasizes DDD, microservices, automated testing, and full service ownership. Because the platform operates in a regulated domain, security, reliability, fault tolerance, and strong test coverage are essential.
A key aspect of this role is product-oriented engineering. Rather than focusing solely on technical implementation, you’ll work closely with Product to understand the business domain, translate requirements into technical solutions, and take responsibility for delivering complete features.
The platform is also transitioning toward Golang as its target backend language, providing an opportunity to contribute to the evolution of its backend architecture.

Team Composition
You’ll join a distributed engineering team led by an Engineering Manager.
Development is organized into Scrum teams or smaller engineering pods of approximately 2–3 developers.
You’ll work closely with Product, UI developers, project managers, team leads, and DevOps/Infrastructure engineers to deliver complete product features.
As a Senior Engineer, you’ll be expected to take ownership of your area of responsibility, proactively clarify requirements, communicate technical decisions, and support junior developers through mentoring and code reviews.
