Backend Engineer

Join a team building AI-powered capabilities for a cloud-based quality management platform serving the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device sectors, where reliability, compliance, and innovation are critical. In this role, you will design and deliver backend services that power AI assistants, document understanding, and structured data extraction. You’ll work across the full lifecycle, from architecture and implementation to production operations, helping shape reliable AI features that support compliance-focused business processes.

Required for this role

• 5+ years of experience in backend software development with strong proficiency in Python
• Experience delivering and operating LLM-powered features in production environments
• Hands-on experience implementing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and/or tool-calling capabilities
• Experience evaluating AI solutions using reference datasets, automated validation, and human review processes
• Strong understanding of REST API design, backend architecture, and service integration patterns
• Experience working with message buses, message queues, and asynchronous communication concepts
• Strong data modeling skills, including entities, relationships, and constraints, along with experience working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
• Experience deploying and operating containerized backend services on cloud platforms, including monitoring, logging, distributed tracing, and CI/CD pipelines
• Strong understanding of unit testing, integration testing approaches, mocking strategies, secure coding practices, and failure handling
• Ability to work independently, adopt AI-assisted development practices, mentor junior engineers, and continuously learn new technologies

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Go
• Experience contributing to backend services written in both Python and Go environments

Your responsibilities

• Build AI assistants that help users find and understand information across quality records, documents, and related data sources
• Develop RAG solutions with source citations while enforcing data access permissions and tenant isolation requirements
• Create document processing and extraction services that convert unstructured content into validated structured data
• Design data models for quality-related information, extracted content, and their relationships
• Design and implement backend services, REST APIs, and tool integrations, supported by comprehensive unit and integration tests
• Collaborate with QA and Product teams to define AI evaluation datasets, expected outcomes, release criteria, and quality measurements
• Own services throughout deployment, monitoring, diagnostics, maintenance, and ongoing reliability improvements
• Monitor response quality, operational performance, and model usage costs to ensure sustainable production operations
• Mentor junior developers, support code reviews, and collaborate closely with product managers, frontend engineers, QA specialists, and infrastructure teams
