Data Engineer
About Zoral. Zoral is an IT product and professional services company serving banks, insurers, wealth managers and fintechs. Alongside its flagship product, Zoral fOS (Financial Operating System), Zoral delivers data, analytics and AI programmes for regulated financial-services firms in Europe, the UK, the US and Asia.
About the role. We are looking for a Power BI Report Engineer to rebuild regulatory, management and operational reporting on governed data platforms for regulated financial-services clients in the UK. Typical programmes deliver several hundred reports on Azure Databricks and Power BI through a report factory: Business Analysts first rationalise the report inventory, data engineers build certified data products, and Power BI engineers build the certified semantic models, the report templates and the complex and regulatory reports on top of them. Reports are delivered in batches of about five weeks by report slice teams of Business Analysts, Power BI engineers and data engineers. Routine report drafts are generated by governed AI from the certified semantic models; you review, complete and certify them, so engineering judgement and quality matter more than volume.
Responsibilities
• Design certified Power BI semantic models, Kimball star schemas, with governed KPI and metric definitions, hierarchies, row-level and object-level security and incremental refresh.
• Choose and implement the right connection mode on Databricks SQL warehouses: Import for performance, DirectQuery with Entra ID single sign-on where row and column security must apply per viewer; prepare for the Fabric mirrored catalog and Direct Lake where Fabric capacity is confirmed.
• Build reusable report templates and design standards that later batches, and the client’s own analysts building simpler reports, reuse.
• Build and migrate complex and regulatory reports and dashboards; review, correct and certify AI-drafted reports and measures before publication.
• Reconcile every report to its data mart and to the legacy version during parallel running; write report tests and keep the evidence with each release.
• Write and optimise DAX, Power Query (M) and SQL; tune models and reports for performance and plan capacity with the platform team, keeping critical reporting separate from self-service workloads.
• Apply governance in Power BI: workspace structure, certified and shared datasets, endorsement, group-based access, sensitivity labels carried from the catalog and audit of exports.
• Keep reports and models under version control (Power BI Projects / PBIP) and release them through the automated delivery pipeline with the DevOps and Platform Engineer.
• Use AI tools to accelerate report and measure development, and review, test and certify AI-drafted output before publication.
• Work with Business Analysts on report rationalisation and KPI definitions; support user acceptance testing, train report owners and analysts, and write hand-over documentation.
Requirements
• Four or more years of hands-on Power BI development in production, including enterprise semantic-model design.
• Strong SQL.
• Solid dimensional modelling: Kimball star schemas, slowly changing dimensions and as-at reporting.
• Row-level and object-level security, incremental refresh, composite models, Import versus DirectQuery trade-offs and performance tuning (DAX Studio, Tabular Editor or similar).
• Power BI on Azure Databricks or another cloud lakehouse or warehouse (Databricks SQL, Synapse, Snowflake or similar).
• Experience migrating reports from legacy BI or spreadsheet-based processes, including reconciliation and parallel running.
• Experience delivering reporting in financial services (wealth or asset management, banking, insurance, pensions) or another regulated industry.
• Ability to work directly with business users, challenge requirements and explain data clearly.
• Practical experience with AI-assisted reporting (for example Copilot in Power BI or similar), including reviewing and validating AI-generated measures and reports.
• Good written and spoken English.
Nice to have
• Unity Catalog and Publish to Power BI from Catalog Explorer; Microsoft Fabric, mirrored Azure Databricks catalog and Direct Lake.
• Power BI Projects (PBIP), Git integration, deployment pipelines and Power BI REST APIs; Power BI administration.
• Expert DAX and Power Query (M).
• Paginated reports (Power BI Report Builder) for regulatory and operational outputs.
• AI-assisted report development (Copilot in Power BI, Databricks AI/BI dashboards or Genie) with human review.
• Knowledge of UK regulatory and management reporting, for example FCA reporting or Consumer Duty evidence.
• Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate or Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate.
• Willingness to travel to client premises in the UK for workshops and key milestones.
Tech stack: Power BI (Desktop, Service, semantic models, paginated reports, deployment pipelines), DAX, Power Query (M), SQL, Azure Databricks (Databricks SQL warehouses, Unity Catalog), Microsoft Fabric (when adopted), Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, Git, Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, Jira or Azure DevOps Boards, Confluence.
