Data Engineer
Overview
You’ll own the operational health of a modern data platform — the Snowflake warehouse, the dbt transformation layer, and the ELT pipelines feeding them. The role sits at the intersection of data engineering, platform operations, and team enablement: keeping the platform reliable and performant, keeping its cost under control, and raising the standard of how the wider data team works.
This is a hands-on role with real stakeholder exposure. You’ll work across Data Engineering, Analytics, Finance, and Security rather than inside a single team.
Responsibilities
Platform operations & reliability
- Own the operational health of the Snowflake environment — warehouse sizing, query performance optimisation, and cost management
- Monitor and maintain dbt project health: model performance, test coverage, documentation standards
- Ensure ELT pipeline reliability across ingestion tooling, with appropriate alerting and incident response
- Manage data freshness SLAs and communicate proactively when issues arise
Cost & resource management
- Monitor and optimise Snowflake credit consumption; identify inefficient queries and recommend warehouse configurations
- Implement resource monitors, tagging strategies, and chargeback models where appropriate
- Partner with Finance to forecast data platform costs and manage budget
Governance & quality
- Establish and enforce data quality frameworks using dbt tests, freshness checks, and anomaly detection
- Maintain access control policies and ensure compliance with data governance requirements
- Own incident management for data issues, including root cause analysis and prevention
Enablement & process
- Define and maintain operational runbooks for common tasks and incident response
- Support engineers and analysts with dbt best practices, code review standards, and deployment processes
- Champion observability tooling to give the team visibility into data health
Collaboration
- Work with Data Engineering on infrastructure improvements and architectural decisions
- Partner with Analytics and BI teams to understand consumer needs and prioritise reliability work
- Coordinate with Security and Compliance on audit requirements and access reviews
Who You Are
- Hands-on by preference — you’d rather open the query plan than delegate it
- Comfortable owning a platform’s reliability, not just building on top of it
- A clear communicator across engineering, analytics, finance, and compliance
- Cost-conscious: you treat credit consumption as an engineering problem
- Someone who raises the standard around them through runbooks, review, and enablement
Tech Stack You’ll Work With
- Warehouse: Snowflake — administration, warehouse sizing, resource monitors, SQL optimisation
- Transformation: dbt (Core or Cloud) — incremental models, macros, testing frameworks
- ELT: Fivetran, Airbyte, Stitch or comparable ingestion tooling
- DataOps: version control, automated testing, CI/CD for data
- Observability: Monte Carlo, Elementary, dbt Cloud or similar
- Orchestration: Airflow, Dagster, Prefect
Qualifications
Must-Have
- Extensive experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data platform roles
- Strong hands-on Snowflake administration and SQL optimisation
- Proficiency with dbt (Core or Cloud), including incremental models, macros, and testing frameworks
- Experience operating ELT pipelines at scale (Fivetran, Airbyte, or custom solutions)
- Understanding of DataOps principles and CI/CD for data — version control, automated testing, deployment pipelines
- Strong stakeholder management and communication
Nice-to-Have
- Data observability platforms: Monte Carlo, Elementary, Datafold
- Orchestration tooling: Airflow, Dagster, Prefect
