Network Engineer
Who we are:
Adaptiq is a technology hub specializing in building, scaling, and supporting R&D teams for high-end, fast-growing product companies in a wide range of industries.
About the Product:
Our client is a technology company with investment backing, developing infrastructure for computationally demanding applications. The engineering team is expanding its networking capabilities to support growing customer demand and increasingly complex deployments.
Customers need dependable, protected access to workloads running across interconnected infrastructure. Delivering that access involves coordinating customer networks, telecommunications providers, data centers, cloud services, and Linux systems. The company is looking for an experienced engineer who can bring these components together and establish consistent methods for deploying, monitoring, and supporting customer connectivity.
About the Role:
In this position you will lead the technical development and operation of the company’s production networking environment. This includes assessing existing implementations, setting architectural direction, delivering changes, and taking responsibility for their ongoing reliability.
Networking currently has no dedicated team, and the architecture remains open to development. You will have substantial autonomy to establish technical standards, choose implementation approaches, and shape operating practices.
Your scope will extend from customer access points to the systems executing their workloads. Alongside routing and security, you will address the connections between facilities, external providers, cloud environments, and individual hosts. You will also help engineers provision new customer connections through reusable configurations and automation.
The role combines design, implementation, troubleshooting, and production support, including participation in an on-call rotation. It requires confidence working through incomplete requirements and explaining decisions across engineering disciplines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess the existing network, define architectural direction, and own implementation, automation, and production reliability.
- Design and operate connectivity between customer environments and compute workloads across telecom networks, infrastructure partners, hosting facilities, and cloud environments.
- Configure and maintain VLANs, VRFs, segmentation, and firewall policies.
- Define tenant-isolation controls and verify their effectiveness under production conditions.
- Implement secure private access using IPsec, WireGuard, or overlays, including tunnel termination and site-failure handling.
- Build and maintain data-center fabric connectivity and its integration with external providers and cloud services.
- Plan and deliver cross-connects, internet transit, private circuits, and network-as-a-service connections, accounting for lead times, provider dependencies, and commercial constraints.
- Automate network setup and customer connectivity using Python and Terraform, building reusable workflows that other engineers can run safely and consistently.
- Establish observability across hosts, tunnels, overlays, physical networks, cloud services, and carriers.
- Investigate connectivity and performance incidents across organizational boundaries, using technical evidence to identify the failing layer.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and platform engineers on topology, reliability, and performance for high-bandwidth, multi-node workloads.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and improve operational practices based on production experience.
Required Competence and Skills:
- Hands-on production experience with routing between different networks, including diagnosing unexpected routing behavior.
- Experience designing and operating VLANs, VRFs, segmentation, and firewall policies.
- Experience implementing tenant isolation and validating it under real operating conditions.
- Strong Linux networking troubleshooting skills on hosts carrying production traffic.
- Experience with data-center networking and networking services in at least one major cloud platform.
- Production experience supporting customer connectivity built on IPsec or WireGuard.
- Ability to trace packet flows and troubleshoot issues across systems and networks managed by different organizations.
- Experience replacing manually maintained network configurations with reliable automation.
- Practical Python and Terraform skills, including automation used by other engineers in production.
- Understanding of how network design affects the reliability and performance of distributed workloads.
- Ability to make, implement, and explain technical decisions with incomplete requirements.
- Clear English communication and effective collaboration across engineering disciplines.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with a cloud or hosting provider, data-center or network operator, infrastructure company, or enterprise networking vendor.
- Experience supporting HPC, storage, or other bandwidth-intensive environments.
- Experience with carriers, cross-connects, internet transit, private circuits, or network-as-a-service platforms.
- Experience creating connectivity workflows that non-network engineers can deploy safely.
