Software Engineer

We are looking for a hands-on Tech Lead to guide a team of Forward Deployed Engineers building integrations and customizations for enterprise higher-education systems.
You will work closely with engineers and customer technical teams, translate business requirements into practical solutions, and guide delivery from specification to production. Our team works in an AI-native, agent-assisted environment, using AI throughout analysis, development, testing, and documentation.
Your focus will be technical decisions, solution quality, and helping engineers deliver solutions that correctly support the customer’s business processes.

Requirements

Engineering and technical leadership

• 5+ years of professional experience in software development, backend/API engineering, or data integration
• Demonstrated experience guiding engineers, making technical decisions, and taking responsibility for solution quality
• Strong hands-on skills and the ability to investigate unfamiliar code, review implementations, and resolve complex technical issues
• Experience mentoring engineers and conducting constructive design and code reviews

Technical fundamentals

• Good SQL and procedural SQL skills, including the ability to read and understand PL/SQL or similar legacy code
• Practical experience with Oracle or PostgreSQL and willingness to work with both
• Hands-on experience with REST APIs, JSON, and JavaScript for data manipulation and transformation
• Experience building and maintaining integrations between applications, databases, or cloud services
• Ability to investigate production issues and work with systems whose documentation is incomplete
• Understanding of testing, error handling, security, and performance considerations
• Experience with Git and delivering software through testing, deployment, and production support

AI-native engineering

• Practical experience using AI agents as a regular part of engineering work
• Ability to configure and guide agents, provide relevant context, refine instructions, and review their outputs
• Ability to validate AI-generated code and specifications against technical and business requirements
• Willingness to help the team adopt effective AI-assisted engineering practices and share successful approaches

Customer communication and teamwork

• Ability to clarify requirements with customer technical teams and translate them into implementation tasks and acceptance criteria
• Curiosity to understand the business process behind a requirement, including exceptions and edge cases
• Ability to explain technical decisions, assumptions, and tradeoffs clearly
• Ability to break down complex work, provide technical estimates, and identify risks and dependencies
• Upper-Intermediate English or higher, sufficient for independent technical discussions with customers

Will be a Plus

• Experience migrating legacy business logic to cloud or SaaS platforms
• Experience in forward deployed engineering, implementation consulting, or another customer-facing engineering role
• Experience building or orchestrating AI agents and reusable engineering workflows
• Experience working on higher education projects, with familiarity with Ellucian Banner, Colleague, Ethos API, or other Student Information Systems
• Experience with iPaaS/ETL platforms, Python, or Java
• Hands-on experience with cloud services, CI/CD, and production monitoring

Responsibilities

• Guide technical design and implementation across new integrations, legacy migrations, and production enhancements
• Work with customers and domain experts to clarify business rules and technical requirements
• Help engineers turn requirements into clear specifications, implementation tasks, and tests
• Review designs, code, and AI-generated outputs for correctness, maintainability, and alignment with business needs
• Remain hands-on in complex investigations, critical implementations, and technical escalations
• Mentor FDEs and help them develop technical skills, domain understanding, and independent judgment
• Improve the team’s use of AI agents and contribute reusable practices and workflows
• Work with the project manager on estimates, dependencies, and delivery risks
• Ensure solutions are tested, documented, and ready for deployment and support
