Backend Engineer

About the Role

Our client is a leading European provider of solutions for closing product, material, and logistics cycles, with a strong focus on recycling and sustainability. The company helps businesses manage recyclable materials responsibly, improve sustainability performance, and reduce the use of primary resources.

We’re looking for a Senior Java Developer to help shape the next generation of long-term products. You’ll work closely with Product, UX, and Front-End teams, designing Java backends, influencing architecture, and helping evolve a modern headless, microservice-oriented platform.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Java backends for both new and evolving products.
• Translate business goals into domain models and reliable backend services.
• Help shape a headless, microservice-oriented architecture by designing clean APIs, refining coding standards, and driving meaningful refactoring.
• Build and improve GitLab CI/CD pipelines, Docker images, and workflow engines that eliminate manual steps in both development and the products themselves.
• Work closely with Product, UX, and Front-End teams to deliver the APIs, data, and performance needed to create a great user experience.
• Mentor junior engineers, facilitate architecture discussions, or lead a small squad if that’s the direction you’d like to grow.
• Experiment with new Java features, cloud services, and patterns that help improve products and development processes. Your ideas are welcome.

Requirements

Must have

• 5+ years of professional Java development experience.
• Experience with Spring Boot and Hibernate/JPA.
• Strong knowledge of RESTful API design.
• Experience with relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL).
• Experience with Docker.
• Familiarity with GitLab CI/CD.
• Understanding of clean architecture, test automation, and choosing the right solution for the right problem.
• Fluent English.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with React, Next.js, or TypeScript.
