About the company

Jappware is a software development company that delivers innovative and reliable digital solutions for international clients.

We specialize in end-to-end product development — from ideation and design to architecture, development, and DevOps support.

About the project

We are building a cloud-native SaaS platform composed of Java and Spring Boot services deployed to Kubernetes. The platform uses REST and gRPC APIs, reactive and event-driven communication patterns, and a combination of relational, document, caching, and search technologies. The platform architecture and engineering standards are established; engineers will extend existing services and build new capabilities within those guardrails.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our growing team in Lviv or remotely. You will be part of a cross-functional team working on cutting-edge solutions for international clients, using modern technologies and agile methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Build maintainable backend services and APIs using modern Java, Spring Boot, and appropriate Spring modules, following the platform’s defined architecture and standards.
  • Read and understand existing code across services to grasp feature sets, data flows, and integration points, and build on them effectively.
  • Develop reactive, non-blocking services with Spring WebFlux and Project Reactor, with practical judgment about when reactive programming is — and is not — the right choice.
  • Build event-driven integrations using Kafka and/or RabbitMQ, applying sound practices for message delivery, idempotency, retries, ordering, and dead-letter handling.
  • Model and access data in relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL databases, apply caching effectively with Redis, and use Elasticsearch/OpenSearch for indexing and search workloads.
  • Package and deploy services to Kubernetes end-to-end: authoring Helm charts, managing Kubernetes configuration (ConfigMaps, Secrets (Hashicorp Vault), health probes, resource requests/limits, HPA), and executing safe rolling deployments.
  • Write automated tests, participate in design and code reviews, troubleshoot production issues, and continually improve service reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with product, architecture, security, DevOps/SRE, and other engineering teams throughout the software delivery lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Strong Java development skills: object-oriented design, collections, concurrency, asynchronous processing, and JVM fundamentals.
  • Production experience with Spring Boot; practical knowledge of Spring WebFlux/Project Reactor and reactive programming principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar codebases: tracing code paths, understanding existing features and conventions, and making changes that fit the established design.
  • Strong API engineering skills: REST/HTTP semantics, API contracts, validation, error handling, pagination, versioning, and OpenAPI documentation.
  • Distributed-systems fundamentals: timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, rate limiting, idempotency, caching, and graceful degradation.
  • Experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ and event-driven/asynchronous communication patterns.
  • Solid relational database skills with PostgreSQL or MySQL: schema design, SQL, transactions and isolation, indexing, query optimization, and schema migrations (e.g., Flyway/Liquibase).
  • Working knowledge of NoSQL data modeling, querying, indexing, consistency, and performance; Elasticsearch/OpenSearch experience is valuable.
  • Experience using Redis (or a comparable distributed cache) for caching, session state, or rate limiting, including cache invalidation and TTL strategies.
  • Strong automated-testing practices with JUnit 5, Mockito, AssertJ, Spring Boot Test, and Testcontainers; integration and contract testing expected.
  • Application security fundamentals with Spring Security: TLS, JWT, OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect, authentication vs. authorization, secrets management, and secure API development.
  • Hands-on Kubernetes deployment experience, including Helm: writing and maintaining charts, values management across environments, Kubernetes configuration (ConfigMaps, Secrets, readiness/liveness/startup probes, resource requests and limits), horizontal scaling, androllout/rollback strategies.
  • Practical scripting with Shell and/or Python for automation, diagnostics, build/deployment tasks, and developer tooling.
  • Git, Maven or Gradle, CI/CD pipelines, and production observability through structured logs, metrics, and traces (OpenTelemetry).
  • Hands-on experience with production observability tooling — at least one in each category: metrics/dashboards (Prometheus, Grafana), log aggregation (Splunk, ELK/OpenSearch Dashboards,Loki), and APM (New Relic, Datadog, Dynatrace, or Azure Application Insights) — for monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting live services.
  • Ability to communicate trade-offs clearly, review code constructively, and take ownership of services in production.

What we are offering

  • Challenging and innovative environments.
  • Flexible schedule and remote-friendly culture.
  • 20 paid vacations and 15 sick leave days.
  • Quarterly budget for learning & development activities.
  • Team events, workshops, and internal tech meetups.
